From the Arctic Circle to the cosmos
Brage W. Johansen, M.Sc, is an entrepreneur and leader who has transformed several disruptive technologies into innovations. He is deeply concerned with sustainability, civilisational development, and is a visionary technology optimist — passionately driven by the exploration of space, planets, and the expanses of our solar system.
Born north of the Arctic Circle and educated at NTNU, Singularity University, and the International Space University, Johansen has worked on space technology projects with both NASA and ESA. He holds several board positions in Norwegian aerospace organisations and is a frequent speaker on entrepreneurship, space exploration, and technology development.

Why a watch?
Through years of presentations to students and adults alike, I noticed a consistent gap. Basic facts about the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun are often misunderstood — or not understood at all. How can we communicate astronomy in a way that is both simple and intuitive?
The answer was hiding in plain sight: the watch. It is something we check constantly. Time and place are inseparable — not in the sense of Einstein's relativity, but in the practical sense of our position on Earth, both geographically and physically.
A connection lost
Historically, the clock was closely tied to nature. By day it reflected the movement of the Sun; by night, the stars. That connection has largely disappeared. Today's standard display — two cycles of twelve hours — is a human construct that no longer reflects the natural world.
Modern timekeeping is designed for coordination and control. It helps us schedule meetings, track work hours, and measure performance. But in doing so, it has distanced us from the rhythms of nature. Many people assume that seconds, minutes, and hours are natural units defined by the cosmos. They are not. They are the result of human decisions, shaped by compromise and history.
A new era
I believe we are entering a new era — one where humankind expands into near space, takes better care of nature on Earth, and gains a deeper understanding of the solar system and our place within it.
We need to educate people about the connection between space, nature, people, and time. Earth Moves is that education platform — and I hope we will produce a range of products to help with this mission.
